Sound, Color and Creative Coding encourages creative exploration and experimentation while learning the basics of creative coding and physical computing through sound, color, and data translation. We will consider how analogue experience informs digital art and what kinds of formal and possibilities are present in their coexistence. This course is divided into three sections: Soundscapes, Color Space and Duration, and Sound/Color/Frequency. In the Soundscapes section, we will create soundscapes using field recordings, and consider the spatial aspects of sound by creating two-channel sound installations. In Color Space and Duration students will be introduced to innovative ways of working with color and time by creating durational works centered on color, including gifs and prints. This class will culminate with Sound/Color/Frequency, a section on data translation between color and sound, using creative coding in the program Processing and physical computing (electronics and sensors) with Arduino to create interactive works of art. Students are encouraged to express themselves in their preferred mediums while developing their skills in creative coding. No previous coding or electronic/circuit board building experience is necessary, though students with this experience will be able to flourish as well. Students will receive individual in-depth guidance to realize self-directed final projects. A few examples of past projects produced in this class include wearable sculptures, installations, and narrative videos all of which were interactive. Together we will explore the political, social, and formal aspects of sound, color, and data translation through in depth discussions, readings by experimental composers, artists, poets, and writers, all while creating artworks in response to assignments.
