Character Masque

Spring 2020

Taught By: Shelley Wyant

Section: A

CRN: 4005

Credits: 1

Students will explore a series of exercises that promote a physical investigation. Utilizing the ancient tool of the masque, students will make discoveries that will lead them toward many of the elements essential to the language of the actor. Together the class will build a vocabulary of physical gesture. In this class students will have an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the imagination. Imagination is not linear; it is like a dream that follows no logical progression. Through the exploration of this ever-expanding list, with reflection from yourself and your peers and observation of the work of others, you will grow deeply into contact with the world of characters within yourself. The list includes; Character Name: Age: Gender: Voice & Breath: Physicality: Status: Job: Self-image Dreams/Fears: Marital Status: World View: Sexual Identity: Ethnicity: Talents. Using a new set of character masks, masks that have no mouths, we engage the voice to discover a variety of characters.

Students who wish to enroll in a graduate theater course at The New School for Drama must be accepted into the graduate theater program as a full-time student.
