Dialects 1

Fall 2019

Taught By: Patricia Fletcher

Section: A

CRN: 1454

Credits: 2

The first 3 dialects follow an arc. Each one builds specifically on the sound changes and adjustments of the previous, resulting in a more formal dialect. Neutral American Speech, covered in the student's first year, is used as the base upon which the first 3 dialects are built. The 3 dialects are as follows; Classical American, Mid-Atlantic and Standard British (or RP). This format is meant to help students understand hear and identify how theses dialects intersect and to assist them in making appropriate speech/dialect choices and adjustments, especially when approaching the Classics.

Students who wish to enroll in a graduate theater course at The New School for Drama must be accepted into the graduate theater program as a full-time student.
