"At Lincoln Center, we believe the arts are an essential part of civic life. They reflect and inform the world in a process that is inherently democratic—valuing freedom of expression and an open exchange of ideas and calling for active participation of artists and audiences. In this course you will become familiar with philosophers, educators and artists who have wondered about, explored, and analyzed the transformational exchange possible between an engaged observer and a work of art. We will ask you to participate in thoughtful exploration and discussion around works of art and artistic practice across a variety of media (dance, music, drama, painting, and public art). As a culminating project, you will create a work of art and a statement of artistic purpose that reflect key understandings from the course. "
