In this workshop, students actively engage with the elements of the stage – exploring lights, sound, costumes, movement, text, architecture, and other theatrical elements – to discover their narrative and theatrical potential, as well as the poetry inherent in each element. Students will train to develop facility working with individual elements and use these skills to create short devised works. MOMENT WORK is a technique for writing performance developed by the members of Tectonic Theater Project. Used in a laboratory setting, the technique encourages the participants to create work that is uniquely theatrical. It pushes writers, actors, designers, and directors to collaborate in the making of work that focuses on using all theatrical elements. The technique breaks apart the traditional roles of theater artists, enfranchising artists of all disciplines to move out of their defined roles and become theater makers: true investigators of the possibilities of the medium. This approach to devising new work encourages students to experiment in theatrical language and form, to unlock their theatrical imagination, and to discover the multitudes of ways that the elements of the stage can communicate. Students are taught to analyze and critique work from a structuralist perspective. The workshop culminates in a presentation of a short piece created over the course of the workshop.
