Elevator Repair Service (ERS) is a 30-year old company that creates work from traditionally non-theatrical sources such as Supreme Court transcripts, debates,YouTube videos and works of literature (our best known piece is Gatz, a 6 1/2 hour marathon performance of The Great Gatsby). ERS will offer a course on creating original, ensemble-generated performance. Participants work with ERS ensemble members to create short works from unconventional sources, including found objects, literature, video clips, and home environments reconceived as site-specific performance spaces. The workshop teaches techniques for creating work with available materials, using space limitations as inspiration, and developing creative instincts. Each successive session will add material to a larger project presented at the course’s conclusion. These intensive sessions introduce participants to ERS and its history and its process, as well as to innovative ways to conceive and create new work.
