Smart Cities and Urban Values
Spring 2022
Taught By: Michael A Cohen
Section: A
CRN: 9606
Credits: 3
This course will examine the smart city movement over the past decade and seek to evaluate the pros and cons of the application of technology to the resolution of urban problems. Students will learn about the theory of smart cities and a range of the application of so-called smart city technologies against the backdrop of a parallel and growing conversation about urban values and ethics. Major urban theorists have begun to write about urban ethics and values in response to the growing complexity of agendas that are being considered at the urban level. These include the role of the city in global and national economic progress, the likely impact of climate change, the growing number of international migrants coming to cities, and the evidence of increasing intra-urban inequality. These discussions about urban ethics and values will be used as criteria to evaluate smart city proposals.
