Informed by decolonization approaches and socio-ecological perspectives, this course centers individual and collective healing, identity examinations, critical and generative reflections for flourishing in the context of our relationship with the natural environment using mindfulness and contemplative pedagogy and technological immersion experience through VR. The course will utilize 3D VR infrastructure for enhancing the collective/group experience of shared exploration, peer learning, and community building in the following ways: Explore significant physical locations/ecologies such as the Great Barrier Reef, Grand Canyon, Amazon, and Outer space through 3D immersive activities and practice group meditation in these locations via VR/AR; Augment the collective experience with socio-ecological history research of these locations and engaging in land acknowledgement practices; Students will also share their own videos of places they feel connected to or have special attachment/significance and the class will also use these videos as sites of collective experience; Group meditation using avatars within 3D spaces/campus and sharing and interpersonal exercises within small groups and pairs.
