Global Images Metropol Futures

Spring 2021

Taught By: Margarita Gutman

Section: A

CRN: 9012

Credits: 3

This course explores the way the urban future is envisaged by different disciplines in different geographies such as Buenos Aires, Mumbai (Bombay), New York, and Shanghai. The course looks at these cities from the perspectives of visual culture, architecture, urban planning, art history, geography, and other social sciences. It analyzes the patterns and complexity of the international flow of visual culture related to images of the future, their agency, conditions of dissemination, and interaction with local contexts. Studying cities on different continents, the course examines how globalization affects local images and visions and is in turn affected by them. Students will take part in the International Project “2084 Imagined Futures” and in a studio mode they will research online about current and past imaginations of the future which address urban vulnerabilities in different cities. Results of this work will be sent to the Museum of Futures website for review and uploading.
