Urban Journalism

Spring 2022

Taught By: Lauren Walsh

Section: A

CRN: 10896

Credits: 4

This course in “urban journalism” explores ways that our city is represented in the media, primarily in print and photography. We read about the journalistic coverage of diverse people and events around New York City, examining hot-button issues surrounding race and class, and considering ways in which crime is covered in the news. Our focus on photojournalism, meanwhile, investigates intricacies and even controversies of photographic representation as we also visit and report on some of the city’s visual offerings. Journalism is a fundamental component of a productive democracy and we will put this idea into action, with hands-on assignments in journalistic practice and civic engagement. Guest speakers may include NYC journalists, and city-based assignments and excursions are an important part of this seminar. A background in journalism/photojournalism is not required.
