Typically, the mission of an art museum is to collect, research and display cultural artifacts for the public. However, changing audience expectations and the advent of new technologies has led 21st century curators and exhibition designers to rethink the paradigms they use to manage, mediate, and promote art and heritage within society. While curatorial practice was transformed in the wake of postcolonial critique and social movements like BLM and #metoo, there is also increasing demand for innovative, immersive and interactive exhibitions. Ultimately, museums must continually reinvent their storytelling techniques and mediation strategies to offer an inclusive and accessible experience that is relevant to contemporary audiences. This course gathers designers and cultural professionals together in a collaborative hands-on investigation of these practices. Through academic discussions, field research, and design prototyping, students will learn to create analog and digital mediation tools for potential clients. As students learn to apply their design skills to real-world settings, they will also enhance their understanding of the goals and constraints faced by different art institutions.
