This course explores key legal concepts as they apply to the fashion industry, focusing on an international perspective. It integrates students’ concurrent studies in finance, marketing, and business strategy while introducing innovative legal frameworks. Topics include intellectual property (licensing, counterfeiting, and trademark strategy), contracts and environmental law. Law is a critical component of strategic business planning, particularly in the competitive fashion industry, which continuously balances creativity and commerce, as well as rarity and accessibility. Through fifteen sessions, this course offers a comprehensive introduction to fashion law—an emerging and dynamic branch of legal practice. Students will gain an overview of foundational legal principles while examining the legal challenges faced by industry stakeholders today, from aspiring entrepreneurs to global conglomerates, spanning the spectrum from high-street brands to haute couture houses. Combining business and legal materials, lecture-style presentations, and in-class debates, the course bridges legal theory and practical application. Students will engage with concrete case studies to critically analyze the core aspects of this expanding field.
