This studio-based elective explores unconventional, versatile, and inventive approaches to silhouette and shape development. Students will be introduced to 3D pattern-making and draping techniques as an alternative design tool to sketching. Different approaches to innovative shape creation will be explored, allowing students to develop new forms not derived from traditional techniques. Students will start experimenting with 3D processes to design garments by creatively exploring shapes, volumes, and construction methods. The creative process will include fitting, to reflect on different aspects such as body diversity, the interaction of the body and movement, as well as proportions and details. Students will learn how to translate their experimental silhouettes into patterns and final materials, gaining understanding of the importance of material selection, finishes, and detailing, and how they inform the final design outcome.
