Women, Fashion & Cinema: Dressed to be Free
Parsons Paris: Parsons Paris
CRN: 18113
Credits: 3
Drawing on French movies from the late 50s and the 60s, this course explores how actrices such as Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve, Jean Seberg or Jeanne Moreau embodied female characters who challenged, negotiated, and redefined prevailing patriarchal norms. It investigates how costume, style, and bodily posture conveyed emerging ideals of independence, modernity, and self-expression. Through readings, archival materials, and visual analysis, students also discuss how these icons influenced youth street fashion at the time and they consider the extent to which their legacy continues to shape contemporary French fashion today. This course is in French and is dedicated to students who already completed French Intensive 3 or who are at a B1 level and beyond.
