The Fold and Decoloniality in Fashion (Erica de Greef & Lesiba Mabitsela) The Fold online course is designed to offer a set of research tools, afrocentric frameworks and decolonial debates for participants to experiment with over a period of 15 weeks. Particular attention is given to supporting alternate ways of thinking and writing about fashion from the continent that disrupts and overcomes the deep impact of coloniality/modernity in African fashion histories, archives and contemporary imaginaries. The course employs speculative curiosities as methodology with live online presentations, practical sessions and weekly tasks supported by readings and recommended listening and viewing content. The course culminates with an original reflective compilation in the form of a video essay, thought-piece, zine, collage or podcast developed through the weekly assignments and supported by the readings, reflections and ongoing provocations. The course aims to support designers, researchers, students of fashion and creative ecosystems on the continent (and within the diaspora), in order to co-create a community of African Studies thinkers and makers. The course is designed in such a way that alumni are invited back ‘into the fold’ with ongoing engagements as well as opportunities to share in the continually evolving knowledge exchanges that showcase diverse and different critical positions and afro-centric knowledges for and with participants. The course is structured to create a growing, polyvocal discourse that supports and expands upon the complex, diverse, nuanced and everchanging African fashion narratives, cultures, histories and futures.
