Fashion is intrinsically linked to publishing cultures. While the proliferation of fashion has been historically centered around magazines, film and TV, today fashion brands are becoming publishing companies, sponsoring and producing an enormity of printed and digital media. Created in collaboration with the leading research platform and online bookshop RareBooksParis, this intensive course focuses on the landscape of fashion publications and fashion publishing cultures while exploring the fashion of printed matter in the digital era. While unveiling its imaginaries, the stereotypes, the course Printing Fashion discloses the transactions, the conventions, the labour, the value exchanges, its objecthood, the hidden practices and figures that surround the mediation of fashion. Using documents and ephemera from the archive of RareBooksParis, students will be asked to learn about key figures and projects in the contemporary history of fashion publishing while also proposing their own view on what it means to publish fashion today.
