Creative Writing and Fashion
Parsons Paris: Parsons Paris
CRN: 17830
Credits: 3
Fashion as a cultural phenomenon is embedded with language, writing and even literature. How do words navigate this field often more easily associated with image than it is with text? In the course Creative Writing and Fashion, we will focus on how writing can be an essential tool within the context of fashion but really in any creative process. Learning about creative writing as a method can prove useful through many writing typologies within the world of fashion, whether it’s an article, a collection presentation, a press release, and more broadly as a way to find your own voice. The class will also comment upon the increasing role of literature in the fashion world as luxury houses to niche brands all embrace the book as reference, inspiration as well as strategy. Combining theory and practice, classes will be organized around readings and thinking points as well as a strong emphasis on workshop based activities. We will write during each session, sharing our texts with each other, and building from peer feedback. To ensure the interdisciplinary approach in the field of Fashion Studies, our reading materials, thinking points and writing prompts will feed from academic writing and journalism but also fiction, non-fiction, even poetry. This course will include research sessions at the Parsons Paris library and also welcome guest lecturers from the industry such as fashion journalists, PRs, as well as fashion academics. There aren’t any specific prerequisites except being ready to read significantly and write every week with actual pen and paper.
