Soundscapes in Paris
Parsons Paris: Parsons Paris
CRN: 18185
Credits: 3
How does sound shape the way we experience art, architecture and the world around us? This course explores soundscapes as a creative medium, a cultural phenomenon and a way of understanding our environments. Moving beyond music as a performance or soundtrack, we will investigate how sound and listening inform artistic practices, transform spaces and influence our perception of places, objects and bodies. Through examples from sound art, experimental music, spatial installations, performance and contemporary design, students will explore the relationships between sound, silence, art and everyday life. We will consider how artists work with field recordings, environmental sounds, rhythm, resonance and acoustic properties to create immersive experiences, evoke memories and reveal the often-overlooked sonic dimensions of our surroundings. Combining critical listening, discussion and hands-on experimentation, the course invites students to develop their own approaches to sound as an artistic material. Using Paris as a space of investigation, exercises may include sound walks, recording and manipulating environmental sounds, mapping sonic environments and creating site-responsive compositions or installations. No previous musical training is required.
