Multiculturalism in Artistic Practice
Parsons Paris: Parsons Paris
CRN: 17457
Credits: 3
This course explores how artists, designers, photographers, curators and architects challenge colonial legacies and reshape cultural narratives. By introducing students to the frameworks of decolonial scholars Aníbal Quijano, Enrique Dussel, Rita Laura Segato, Catherine Walsh, Walter Mignolo, Ramón Grosfoguel and Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui the course will explore and critique how practitioners today challenge Western perspectives and explore alternative aesthetic approaches. Central to the course are the concepts of “coloniality of power” and “geopolitics of knowledge”which will serve as a foundational framework to help highlight the prioritization of knowledge produced in global centers while dismissing those created in the periphery. During the semester, students will develop their visual literacy and critical thinking skills by adopting a multidisciplinary approach focused on active looking and understanding. Museum visits, gallery tours, and discussions with practitioners, will empower students to discover diverse approaches to multiculturalism in artistic and design practices, particularly in loaded spaces such as Paris, a center of the European world. Through the study of diverse voices and perspectives, this course challenges students to foster a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between art, design, power, and the construction of knowledge in a global context.
