CRN: 14945
Credits: 3
This class explores the history of collections and museums from the medieval period to the present.Through lectures, readings and numerous site visits, we will examine crucial moments and models in the history of this institution– from curiosity cabinets to ethnographic collections, from royal treasuries to digital art venues. As spaces that embody cultural capital, prestige, and power we will explore how museums mirror the dominant ideologies of the societies that create them. We will discuss the ethical dilemmas linked to the trade in objects, and explore how postcolonial discourse and changing audience expectations has impacted recent curatorial strategy. While art museums offer one model of analysis we will also examine collections dedicated to immigration, science & industry, fashion and more.
