This course introduces students to the techniques and history of analog and digital photography, highlighting their intersections and differences. Through hands-on practice, critical analysis, and discussion, students will engage with photography as both a technical craft and an artistic language. The analog photography module immerses students in darkroom practice while tracing the evolution of the medium during the avant-garde period. Students will learn basic film development and printmaking, as well as experiment with alternative techniques such as solarization, photograms, and chemigrams—processes embraced by artists in movements including Dadaism, Futurism, Surrealism, and Constructivism. The digital photography module explores the contemporary image-making process, covering camera operation, lighting, composition, digital workflow, and visual storytelling. Students will be encouraged to combine technical skills with creative experimentation, ultimately developing a critical understanding of photography’s ongoing transformation from analog to digital.
