Storytelling & Creative Writing
Parsons Paris: Parsons Paris
CRN: 15107
Credits: 3
In her essay “The White Album”, Joan Didion wrote “We tell ourselves stories in order to live.” Storytelling is a constant element of our everyday lives, and almost as constant, is the necessity to write, may it be an email to a colleague, a work presentation, or even the mundane act of writing a grocery list. This constancy makes it important to think about writing as a mindful creative practice whatever it is we write or whatever story we are telling. In this course, we will focus on how storytelling and writing can be essential tools in any creative process. Learning about creative writing as a method to build your own voice can prove useful through many writing typologies, whether it’s a collection presentation, a script, an introduction for an exhibition catalog, anything really. In this class, we will focus on themes such as reading, inspiration, research, first drafts, editing, feedback, and more through a cross-sectional disciplinary approach. Our reading materials, thinking points and writing exercises will come from fiction, non-fiction, poetry, but also academic writing, and journalism. This course will welcome author Vidya Narine as guest speaker and a visit to the American Library in Paris. There aren’t any specific prerequisites except being ready to read significantly and write every week with actual pen and paper.
