Intercultural Competency: Reframing Diversity to Drive Inclusion and Belonging
Parsons Paris: Parsons Paris
CRN: 14978
Credits: 3
Today’s global society is undoubtedly interconnected socially, economically, and politically more than ever before. From a global perspective, the facility of international travel, unprecedented global migration, interconnected global economic systems, and a technological and digital revolution have yielded diverse and global communities within our countries, cities, and organizations. Parsons Paris stands as a vivid exemplar of this pluralistic and globalized community, hosting students and faculty representing over 55 nationalities, and numerous religious backgrounds, genders, races/ethnicities, sexual orientations, beliefs, and life experiences. Notwithstanding, society continues to struggle with cultivating a just and equitable world for individuals, regardless of background. These issues also manifest in art, media, technology, and design ranging from equitable representation of women and historically marginalized cultural, racial, and ethnic groups; appropriation vs. appreciation; stereotypes and microaggressions; challenges stemming from the unprecedented intergenerational workforce; inclusion of individuals with disabilities; narrow conceptions of beauty; and a host of other challenges.
