Photo Stories
Parsons Paris: Parsons Paris
CRN: 16130
Credits: 3
How can the suggestive power of images be activated? What effect is generated by the conjunction of images, text and design ? How can a title, a caption radically transform the meaning of images? How do the images of our own memory interrelate with images from visual history? To what extent the era of social media has reshaped all these questions? This course will explore specific contemporary artist photographers (including video). These lectures will lead to 6 photo assignments and 6 specific group case studies in class. The students will be asked to reinterpret / customise / transform / distort a visual series (or a single image) according to nowadays context in order to create an awareness, activist, press, commercial, fashion or political “campaign”. The photographers studied will be different from the one studied in the Photography Now class. Paris based field trips will be included. No technical knowledge in photography is required. The overall goal of this course is to develop the students’ cultural visual background and their ability to deal with images and words in the “image flow” era.
