A study of German lieder in the mid and late 19th-century, emphasizing changes in the role of the piano as an accompanying instrument and a thorough examination of poetic sources and poetic styles. Singers will be assigned songs of each composer for class presentation; singers and pianists are expected to meet outside of class for rehearsal. Open to graduate singers and pianists, as well as undergraduate juniors and seniors with permission.
