French Arias and Recitative is a course designed for graduate-level singers and coach/accompanists to provide them with the tools to be artists, enabling them to be treated as artistic equals by the conductors, stage directors, and continuo players with whom they collaborate. Utilizing French arias and recitatives as a paradigm, the students learn what questions to ask themselves about the musical, expressive, and dramatic content of the works being studied, in order to construct thoughtful, coherent interpretations of all works they learn for the entirety of their careers. Conductors are also encouraged to enroll. This is a performance and discussion class. Open to undergraduate juniors and seniors with permission.
