Baroque Dance Suites: Move Your Feet
College of Performing Arts: Mannes
CRN: 17620
Credits: 2
The premise of this course is that putting simple versions of choreography for the most common baroque dances into musicians‘ bodies is a stimulating (and fun) way to develop informed ideas about tempi, pacing, character, phrasing and beat inflection in dance movements by J.S. Bach, Handel, etc. The course will address as many standard dance suite movements as time permits, including the menuet, sarabande, allemande and gigue. Students will learn simplified choreography for each dance and then apply what they have learned to musical interpretations of an example of the same dance form. In addition to experiencing a transformative change in understanding dance suite movements, students will also be exposed to many elements of baroque performance practice, baroque notation and performance practice principles in general as well as learning about baroque dance. Open to graduate piano, violin, viola and cello majors. Sophomore, junior and senior piano, violin and cello majors may register with permission of the instructor.
