In this course, we will explore the Suites and Partitas by J.S. Bach from a variety of perspectives. We will discuss a wide range of analytical topics, such as form, tonal structure, dance rhythms, tempo, character, articulation, and others, and their relations to performance. In addition, we’ll address historical performance practices, and the questions that arise when performing these pieces on a modern instrument. The course will center around class performances and short presentations.
