This course is designed for: 1) conductors, collaborative pianists, instrumentalists and anyone else needing to work effectively with singers and the voice; 2) singers who want to deepen their practical understanding of the requirements of ensemble performance; 3) composers and theorists with an interest in writing idiomatic vocal music and leading expert performances. Students will learn leadership and problem-solving skills applicable to ensembles of all kinds as they master the challenges of coordinating unaccompanied singers as well as integrating singers with instruments. The course will cover a broad range of genres (opera, oratorio, motet, and more), languages, and historical periods. Participants will experience lasting insights as they integrate physical, intellectual, and emotional elements of the conductor’s art. Open to graduates and undergraduates. May be repeated once for credit. Pre-requisite: Theory II or by permission of the instructor. This course fulfills the large ensemble requirement for undergraduate students in piano, voice, theory, and composition.
