This course offers an enriched understanding and appreciation of Stravinsky’s music through the analysis of his works, supported by the study of his life and cultural milieu. Detailed investigation of selected compositions, coupled with broad acquaintance with his works, will highlight important stylistic changes while revealing the consistent use of trademark compositional techniques. Among the compositions to be studied are The Rite of Spring, Les Noces, Octet for Wind Instruments, the Violin Concerto, The Flood, and Requiem Canticles. Coursework will include short essays, class presentations and informal performances, and preparation for class discussion through analysis and the study of secondary-source materials. Course is open to graduate students in Mannes, or to undergraduates who have successfully completed CATM 3270, Techniques of Music Since 1900, or with instructor permission .
