Music Since 1950

College of Performing Arts: Mannes

Liberal Arts
Undergraduate Course
Majors Only
Music from 1950-Present
Fall 2024
Taught By: Frank J. Oteri
Section: B

CRN: 11954

Credits: 3

This class focuses upon music from the second half of the 20th century to the present. Oftentimes we tend to consider music as existing within one tradition or another, while the connections across so-called "genre" may be under-examined. We will be looking at a variety of different musics, including not only concert music, but popular music, jazz, folk music and more, as we come to understand the deep relationships and influences that exist between and amongst different traditions. Throughout the semester, we will work towards gaining analytical tools that are sensitive and flexible, such that the activity of analysis is not limited to only the music that responds to one type of approach.
