For students who have already taken Music Since 1950 (CBMH 3105), this course is an opportunity to further explore a variety of topics that were explored during that course in greater detail: e.g. serialism, indeterminacy, minimalism, free jazz, rock, hip-hop, contemporary opera, Broadway musicals, new orchestra music, etc. A significant portion of the semester will be devoted to detailed analyses of specific compositions and recordings. Students will hone their skills writing about music in a critical manner and placing music in a historical context. Emphasis will be placed on experiencing music in live performance as well as on recordings.
