Queer Culture in Music

In the United States of America, there have recently been widespread actions taking place that aim to promote music from diverse areas of the world, and music composed by underrepresented nationalities and ethnicities. What seems surprising, though, is the persistent lack of promotion for LGBTQAI+ culture and visibility in educational settings. Of course, many composers and performers have been members of the queer community for centuries, and they have always represented a vast population within the musical world as we know it. However, many famous figures and pieces throughout music history have been regularly “whitewashed” in regards to their queer identity. There needs to be an equal push to promote the visibility of LGBTQAI+ individuals and their historical contributions throughout all levels of education, as queer art and queer artists have been an invaluable part of progress throughout the entirety of music history. This, in turn, will enable the promotion of an ever-increasing diversity within music education as a whole. By studying various individuals, different genres of music, and specific pieces, this course is meant to highlight the contributions of LGBTQAI+ people throughout our field’s history. By taking this course, students will better understand the significant, innumerous contributions that the queer community has made to our field, and be able to recontextualize repertoire through a queer lens, all while promoting diversity and cultural inclusion. There will be weekly reading and listening assignments, as well as four essays over the course of the semester.
