This course introduces students to the main components and principles of fundraising in the performing arts. Effective fundraising for performing arts nonprofits requires an understanding of the various sources of support available to artists and arts organizations, ranging from corporate sponsors and individuals to public philanthropic support at the local and national level. The performing arts are a very unique context that require its own unique approaches and methods. Students will gain an understanding of the various mechanisms, methodologies and approaches for fundraising in this field, including strategies for creating solicitation materials, developing grant narratives, initiating and completing fundraising campaigns and cultivating donors. Some of the areas covered in this class will include the ethics of fundraising, the role of boards in performing arts nonprofits, and the adaptability and ingenuity in fundraising strategies in the Covid and Post-Covid era.
