This course introduces and develops several key concepts important to the contemporary performer-improviser. Students will perform several times throughout the semester, demonstrating these various concepts. Concepts covered include playing solo, playing duo, and playing with non-traditional instrumentation; chromatic approaches to harmony and melody in improvisation; game theory based performances; and global influences on improvised music. The class will also include discussions and work pertaining to community engagement, and will include performances in non-traditional environments.
