College of Performing Arts: Coll of Performing Arts

Credits: 2
The Entrepreneurial Citizen-Artist investigates the question: How do we build a life as an artist? With no single answer, the class looks to examples of how artists create models of sustainability and navigate the financial systems in which they are embedded. This class will examine the non-profit arts industry, the entertainment industry, and the independent arts (DIY), and artists who have thrived in these spaces. Students will learn strategies for creating their own structures of sustainability as artists in the 21st century, endowed by the history and momentum of past movements and activist aims. As a required class for the MMPC program, this course will attempt to show the practical ways to engage in artistry as a socially conscious citizen-artist. Class materials will include reading, writing, watching, and listening, which will guide students through examples of how they can approach their own entrepreneurial pursuits. The instructor is a working artist, bringing real-world perspectives and activities to the classroom in real-time. Students will take away a better understanding of the non-profit arts industry, and will be required to complete a hefty grant application taken from a real world situation.
