New Narratives: Creating Space for Equity in Music: is a lecture/seminar course in the exploration of the role that gender has played and continues to play in the Jazz and Black American Music community. Via an intersectional approach, this course will provide an atmosphere of discussion, learning, and creative exploration of the landscape and music created by marginalized people, who have largely been left out of historical narratives. Each week, participants will take a deep dive into the creative spaces of individual artists/musicians/composers including Lil Hardin Armstrong, The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Billy Tipton, Mary Osbourne, Alice Coltrane and many more. Through the agency of historical touchstones and theoretical frameworks, students will have opportunities to fill in the gaps of overlooked histories and unearth new inspirations for their own personal/musical growth. This course may be counted towards the graduate seminar requirement for all Mannes MM students, or for the Historically Informed Musician requirement for all MM Performer-Composer students.
