FluxClass is an intensive two-week course focused on performing classic Fluxus works and creating works inspired by the techniques, ideas, and methodologies of Fluxus artists. Fluxus is an experimental and radical international art movement whose history is uniquely tied to The New School. Fluxus was most active in the 1960s and 1970s, and is known for its interdisciplinary, boundary-dissolving approach to all modes of art making. We will explore themes of conceptual performance, emphasizing process over product, blurring the division between art and everyday life, disrupting performance conventions, audience participation, graphic scores, mail art, sound poetry, and event scores. Alongside John Cage’s legendary New School experimental composition course (which laid some robust seeds for the movement), we will luxuriate in the work of George Brecht, Dick Higgins, Allison Knowles, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Benjamin Patterson, Meiko Shiomi, and many others. This course will fulfill College of Performing Arts Undergraduate students' Project Based Performance degree requirement. Any student still needing to fulfil this requirement may take this course for no additional cost.
