Voice / Movement / Performance
College of Performing Arts: Coll of Performing Arts
CRN: 18318
Credits: 2
This course centers on the integration of voice, speech, and movement in performance, with an emphasis on developing physical and vocal awareness to support expressive, embodied storytelling. Through playful and rigorous exploration, students investigate the precise physical actions that underlie both movement and speech, bringing fuller presence and specificity to their work. Voice and speech work is grounded in Knight-Thompson Speechwork, a descriptive, skills-based approach that empowers students to develop precise awareness of and embody a wide range of vocal and speech actions. Emphasizing adaptability over prescription, KTS encourages ongoing investigation and reflection, offering a forward-thinking, practical, and accessible framework for performance. Complementary movement practices cultivate kinesthetic and spatial awareness, deepening each student’s connection to the voice and body in performance. Class activities include solo and partner exercises, individualized coaching of text, and class discussion of assigned readings on voice, speech, movement, and performance.
