Film Analysis for Music Makers
College of Performing Arts: Coll of Performing Arts
CRN: 18325
Credits: 2
A one-semester course designed to introduce music makers interested in sonic/visual media collaborations to film analysis, through both guided and focused viewing of films and critical analysis of film. By the end of this course, students and music makers will have a deeper understanding of the cinematic artform from 1950-the present; will have developed a fluency in cinematic language, supporting their ability to both engage professionally and critically with film as a medium; and will be able to clearly and intelligently communicate with various creatives/future collaborators of filmmaking practices. The class will watch and analyze a diverse collection of visual media––ranging from traditional narrative film, experimental/avant-garde cinema, and installation––from various corners of the world, perspectives, and creative approaches, with the hopes of encouraging students to actively look and listen beyond the surface of the screen and to have a fuller understanding of the artistic and practical roles of music making in the construction of film. This course is a requirement in the College of Performing Arts Minor in Music for Collaborative Media.
