Grounded in Pink Fang (formerly Ping Chong and Company)’s mission to “create[s] art at the intersection of performance, community building and social change, rooted in the ethos and artistic legacy of Ping Chong,” this course will explore Pink Fang’s approach to new work development intertwined with community engagement, including: devising, movement work, and documentary theater practices. This course brings students into engagement with Ping Chong’s interdisciplinary works including “Undesirable Elements” series, an ongoing practice and means of creating interview-based theater works exploring culture, identity, and belonging in specific communities. Led by Chaesong Kim (Interim Education Manager), with guest appearances by Pink Fang artistic leaders, students will consider how to apply these approaches to their own artistic, collaborative, and/or community work. The course culminates in students presenting and receiving feedback on original work and community-engaged project pitch utilizing the practices, methodologies, and creative approaches explored in the course.
