Introduction to Alexander Technique
College of Performing Arts: Coll of Performing Arts
CRN: 14690
Credits: 2
This course is an intro to the Alexander Technique for people who must use their bodies effectively so as not to incur injury or impede performance, specifically musicians and actors. The scope of the course lies beyond simply the release of tension to include the re-education of movement in daily activities so that people's use of themselves improves both in life, as well as in their artistic form. A more efficient coordination is achieved through developing an understanding of a dynamic balance of the head, neck, and back, which becomes integral to sitting, standing, walking, bending, and performing. Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English is needed for this group experiential learning course, which involves movement, performance, observation of self and others, hands on guidance from the instructor, verbal processing and discussion. Out-of-class requirements include a weekly reading followed by a reflective writing response on Canvas, a self study activity, and daily practice to build new habits.
