Resilient Body
College of Performing Arts: Coll of Performing Arts
CRN: 17425
Credits: 2
This course is a full body conditioning class using a fusion of pilates, yoga, dance conditioning and Tai Chi to build a strong and resilient physical instrument (the body) for all performing artists. A resilient body is mobile, stable, fluid, flexible, dynamically controllable, balanced, and free. This practice creates conditions for optimal use and injury prevention. An optimally aligned body allows for the proper muscles to support, stabilize, and mobilize. It also creates conditions for relaxed and efficient movement. Core support is a key element that must be developed to support proper postural alignment. For example, if we cannot rotate the thoracic spine, we collapse and round and the lower back is at risk for injury. This requires core strength and mobility. Many of the habits of life (sitting at computers, being connected to cell phones) have created habitual muscular patterns of holding that are detrimental to this dynamic alignment. Creating balance by strengthening the back body and lengthening the front body can help break these patterns. In this class you will develop an awareness of musculoskeletal balance, functional range mobility, balance and stability, and core strength and how all of these apply to the performing artist.
