Do you want to learn in an intimate setting with some of the most successful, creative, iconoclastic, and groundbreaking musical artists in the world, equally relevant to students from The School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, Mannes, or from any program where a student has a deep interest in creative music. Who are their influences? How have they defined success? What are they working on? What do they think of their own music...and what do they think of yours? These are some of what is covered in this course. In The Stone Workshop at The New School, curated by the legendary John Zorn, through a series of five, three-hour workshops spread across the semester with the Stone Workshop Guest Artists, you will learn from and get to know master musicians who have defied convention, while sometimes performing for and with these great artists. The course also includes presentation of a favorite artists by each student, open discussions on what it means to be experimental as an artist, and opportunities to reflect on what was learned in each workshop. Past Workshop artists have included Laurie Anderson, Ravi Coltrane, Bill Frisell, Fred Hersch, Yura Lee, Christian McBride, Pat Metheny, Matthias Pintscher, Terry Riley, Matana Roberts, and Conrad Tao.
