Composer/Performer
College of Performing Arts: Mannes
CRN: 15447
Credits: 1
This class will serve as a laboratory for student composers and performers to develop new work while examining the evolution of contemporary practices in string quartet literature. Composers and Chamber Music groups will be paired together for the creation and realization of new works, to be workshopped and coached by composer Alyssa Weinberg and JACK Quartet violinist Austin Wulliman throughout the semester, culminating in a final performance. Special emphasis will be placed on the collaborative process, experimentation, extended techniques for strings, and approaches for interpreting new work. While the compositional approaches examined in this course will use string quartet repertoire as the model, techniques discussed will be applicable to all chamber music and this course is open to all performers regardless of instrumentation. Please contact instructors for approval to enroll. Interested performers will be asked to submit a video of their playing representative of their ability to perform contemporary or 20th century chamber music.
