This course will cover the art of sound design from the beginning of the design process, script analysis, meeting with the director, collaborating with the design team, and ultimately creating a fully realized sound design for performance. Students will learn how to edit sound and become familiar with many of the software applications used in professional theatre. The course will include the creation of sound effects, sound collages, and cover the various ways that sound and music can be used in the theatre. Primarily focusing on the creative side of sound design, the course will also cover the basics of system design and sound equipment. Visits to the instructor's technical rehearsals for Broadway and/or Off-Broadway productions will be included as schedules permit.
