Musical Theater Performance Lab 1 is an introductory course to musical theater performance where students will practice the art and craft of musical performance. Classwork will be based on the analysis, exploration, and performance of pre-existing works. We’ll focus on the benefits and pitfalls of type and typecasting, song selection, text and musical analysis, and building up our actor’s toolkit–all in service of equipping the actor to present a strong sung performance rooted in clear dramaturgical choices. A secondary goal of Musical Theater Performance Lab 1 is to get a basic working language of musical theater to set the students up for effective collaboration with Musical Theater Songwriting students over the course of the year. To participate in Musical Theater Performance Lab, students will be expected to be able to find and select material and prepare that material for presentation in class. This course is by permission only.
