Introduction to Improvisation
Spring 2023
Taught By: Anthony Coleman
Section: B
CRN: 9921
Credits: 2
This class will deal with approaches to improvisation through listening, analyzing, copying and learning how to collaborate with other artists. This is all part of creating a personal musical process of creation that is basic to becoming an improviser. Practice techniques and tools to access, create & develop a unique musical language by observing, digesting, and finding your masters/models. Listen and analyze compositions that integrate written notation and open improvisations. Analyze and observe how some improvisers use graphic scores, talk about open improvisation and spontaneous use of Sonics. This can involve using extended techniques with improvisation and how to add time and sensation to unscripted musical development.
