The first half of the Fall term,(7 weeks), will be offered/ taught online, at the beginning of the term, and then the other half of the term, the teaching will be in-person, on campus. Both on Wednesdays starting at 9:55 am. This course deals with topics on Economics and Politics of Climate Change. The focus is on the overuse of natural resources, resource depletion, environmental effects of economic growth, and the economic causes and effects of climate change. We will consider empirical trends of causal factors driving climate change and the frequency and severity of climate disasters. Integrating some economic modeling and policies, we want to stress mitigation and adaptation policies, disaster risks and management, the transformation of the energy system, and the burden-sharing of the cost of climate policies. We will discuss the effectiveness of regulatory instruments, cap & trade, carbon tax, and fiscal and monetary policies. Further important issues are whether the financial market is a roadblock or a bridge to a low-carbon economy, the impact of climate change policies on employment and green jobs, and the currently widely discussed Green New Deal and IRA. Furthermore, we will study to what extent the international climate negotiations and treaties can be framed as cooperative/non-cooperative games. Finally, the issue will be explored of decarbonizing the economy by phasing in renewable and phasing out fossil fuel energy technology. Overall, we will pursue historical trends, empirics, some modeling, and policies. Prerequisites: Some basics of micro and macroeconomics.
