This seminar will explore the varied literary expressions of melancholy and its corresponding affects (from medieval 'accedie,' to early modern 'melancholia,' to cross-cultural considerations of ennui, weltschmerz, saudade, hsüan, yūgen), bringing together perspectives from philosophy, literary studies, and the history of medicine. Undergraduate student will need to contact the instructor for permission to register.
